Proverbs

Proverbs 3:1-12 – Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart

1 My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments,
2 for length of days and years of life
and peace they will add to you.

3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will find favor and good success
in the sight of God and man.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

7 Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
8 It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.

9 Honor the LORD with your wealth
and with the first fruits of all your produce;
10 then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will be bursting with wine.

11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the LORD reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights.

A translation:

My child do not forget these words but instead let your heart keep them because my words will give you a long and peaceful life. Keep them so that love and faithfulness will always be with you. Wear my words as jewelry and write them on your heart so that you will find favor with God and man.

Trust the Lord with all matters and don’t rely on yourself for all the answers. You don’t know everything. In everything you do and say think of the Lord and He will guide you in the right way.

Don’t think you know everything, respect that the Lord is Creator and trust him and turn away from your pride. By doing this you will feel at ease and worry no more.

Honor the Lord with what he has blessed you with and then what you have will be multiplied.

Don’t hate that God will discipline you because of your sin or get tired of his doing so – because just like a father disciplines his children, that is how God disciplines those who are his.

Ask yourself:

Do you meditate daily on God’s word?

Do you put your trust in God with all things? I find myself falling into this trap of self-sufficiency daily and then wondering why I didn’t just trust him in the first place.

Do I consider my own advice over what God has said?

Do I wallow in self pity over what I am going through or do I trust God and know that whatever the outcome it is for His ultimate glory?

Know this:

In every daily task, conversation, drive home, reprimand to a child, decision with money, etc. – God should be at the forefront of our minds and we should offer each up to him prior to following through. Take every thought captive. Take every action captive. Offer yourself as a living sacrifice to God and give him everything of yourself. It is our good and pleasing worship of God to bear the cross of selflessness to him. You won’t be able to do it perfectly, nor does he expect you to. What he wants is your heart attuned to him so that when you fail it is God in Christ that is your refuge.
